Jjuuko Hood
Artist/painter

Works with acrylics on barkcloth which comes from the fig tree. His aim in taking part in this event is to gain more knowledge of working with graphics and computers.
Ssegamwenge, Henry Ssegah
Artist and sculptor

Diploma of Fine Art in sculpture and painting from the Micholangello School of Creative Arts, Kisubi, Uganda. He has exhibitted his work all over Uganda. He is a member of the Uganda Artists Association and the Ngoma International Artists Workshops in Uganda. He also works as an experimental artist in sculpture and painting. During this workshop he wishes to record blacksmiths at work in the surburbs of Kampala (Kisenyi), particularly in relationship to the movements of the workers and the sound of the welding machines and the banging sounds. From this source material he wishes to make a cd-rom as an art object to incorporate in his experimental sculptures/installations.

Kabanda Ronnie
Artist/sculptor/public decorator/poster maker

Ronnie studied fine art at Michealangelo School of Creative Arts, Kisubi, where he graduated with a diploma. He has had exhibited his work at Ngoma Gallery in Bokoto. His aim with this workshop is to gain a new insight to his work through working with technology with reagrds to both concept and technique. He also wishes to gain inspiration for his sculpture work and take the oppurtunity to discuss art with the other worklab participants.

Mugalu Edison

Mugalu is a self-taught young artist working at the Ngoma Studio for Arts in Kampala. His aim for this workshop is to improve his skills with regards to his graphical work, and also art in general.

Mujunga Henry Mzili
Eclectic artist

He works with print making, painting and performance art. His special interest is the re-investigation of an indigenous African Art expression that will help to re-integrate art into contemporary African Society. He is a member of Index Mashariki, a group of 7 Ugandan artists who have dedicated their practice to serving the local community by adressing social issues such as disability and HIV Aids. He is also a member PACA (The Pan African Circle of Artists), a network of African artists trying to create an African perspective for African Art as a counterpoint to its more usual representation in western art literature. In addition he is vice president of the Uganda Artists Association. His aim for this workshop is to make prints using the computer in order to increase his artistic output in market terms, but also to see how his work becomes transformed when processed digitally. Henry will also produce a written report of the workshop.

Naluyima Sylvia
Fabric designer

Naluyima works with a technique of first marbling white cloth and then employs a technique of photo emulsion to create fabrics of intricate design. Her aim with taking part in the workshop is to see how technology can enhance her design work.
Namayanja Diana
Art/graphics student

Namayanja works with video and sound. Her aim with taking part in the workshop is explore the posibilities of working with new aspects of video and animation.
Daudi Karungi
Painter, curator, director of the Afri Art Gallery, Lugogo, Kampala

His aim in general is to promote African Art in an international market. His aim with this workshop is to investigate strategies for both art production and promotion. Daudi is the treasurer of the Uganda Artists Association. His gallery is the host space for Ultra Hot Wired Live Art, Kampala, Uganda 2004.
Mugisa Ronald
Animator/illustrator

He has 8 years experience in 2- and 3D illustration and animation. He is co-owner of the media art and graphic design company, Motion Zee. His interest is in building 3D models, and his aim with this workshop is to learn more about digital sound and sound editing in relation to his work.
Zaasa Peter
Animator/illustrator

He is co-director of the media art and graphic design company, Motion Zee and has worked with 2D graphics. One aim he has in relationship to this workshop is to take part in discussions with participants of this event in order to expand his understanding of art in general, and his own work.
Kiwere Nathan
Sculptor/fabric designer

In addtition to his art work, he is a member of the Ugandan Artists for Peace society, and a journalist for the daily paper "New Vision". Kivera has also worked as a TV presenter. His aim in taking part in this workshop is to enhance his sphere of learning to inform his process of writing about art.
Taga Nuwagaba
Artist

Taga works with watercolour and oils. The main theme of his work is conservation, and as such he often uses African wildlife as his motiv, working from his studio in the bush. He is a member of the Uganda Artists Association, and beleives in the power of art as a uniting force. His main aim in participating in U-HWLA is to gain knowledge of working with digital imagery.

Ssenkaaba Samson
Creative mind

Samson has written, directed and filmed several short films and music videos. He writes poetry, makes audio and visual art works and hybrid performances. He believes that creativity is limitless. His philosophy forms his motivation for participating in the U-HWLA workshop.

Margaret Nagawa
Curator and art co-ordinator

Margret is the former president of the Uganda Artists Association. She is a painter and sculptor. Having completed her art education in Kampala, she worked in an art gallery café for three years and then took a one-year masters degree in curatorship at Goldsmiths College, London. She wishes to make both a digital and printed presentation of Ugandan Art. Her aim with this workshop is to formulate ideas about alternative ideas of presentation.

Ahimbisibwe Ronex

Ronex beleives that art is a reaction to life, and has an experimental and direct aproach to his work. Ronex has exhibitted his work in Uganda, Tanzania, Germany, the Netherlands and Kenya. He has not worked with digital media prior to this worklab. His aims are to explore the possibilities of merging image with sound with regards to exhibiting his work in galleries.

Nsubuga Eria

Eria ia a painter, print maker and illustrator. Like Ronex, his aim with taking part in this workshop is to explore the possibilities of merging image with sound with regards to exhibiting his work in galleries. He is also keen to see how the connections between Norway and Uganda can be sustained, and the consequences that this may have for the future.

Nsaiga David
Musician.
He is a music producer and a musician. He says that while visual artists in africa use their eyes as a source of material for visual work, he makes his art by ear. His aim is to gain skills in digital music production.
Nassolo Hadijah
Art student
Hadijah is a third year student at Makerere University studying industrial fine art. With experience in working with Photoshop, Hadijah aims to get to know about other approaches to art.
Rasta eL Thornen
Hybrid artist
Rasta completed his three-year diploma in art in 1999. Since then he has worked as an artist on the streets of Kampala, but recently returned to his home town, Mayuge, in East Uganda to teach youths. His aims with this workshop are to develop an exchange between his home town and artists in Kampala, and to improve his technical skills regarding music production.

Okur Godfrey Tolas
Musician

Tolas is a drummer and often plays at the Monday night jam sessions at the Musicians Club, National Theatre in Kampala in adition to palying with the Dynamic Adungu Cultural Troupe. He has travelled through different districts in Uganda with his brother Adokwun Jimmy to look at how other musicians work and to collect ideas and inspiration for his own music. His main aim in taking part in U-HWLA is to learn more about how others work with music.

Milton Wabyona
Musician/dancer

Having gained a diploma in dance and drama, Milton got the oppurtunity to travel to Norway to continue his music studies and to teach. Milton uses traditional music as therapy and also runs the Inter Engo Project that helps street kids to make a better life for themselves. His current project is to notate and orchestrate traditional African music such that any orchestra can perform these works. He is currently writing an orchestral score for a western/African orchestra. His aim in taking part in U-HWLA is to extend his network, and to gain more skills in digital music production.
Lydia Mugambi
Artist

Lydia is the director of the Uganda Artists Association, and senior lecturer at Makerere University, Kampala. Having taught secondary school students in Uganda, she then spent 5 years in New York where she used her experience to teach inner-city kids. She paints with "everything" and has exhibitted her work in galleries and in street exhibitions. In 1988 she gained a scholarship to spend 1 year at UCL (University College of London). Her aim in taking part in this worklab is to increase her knowledge of working with digital imagery.
