"MAKING SENSE IV"
02-05 March 2005

I attended the Making Sense IV workshop led by Peter Votova aka DJ Pure at Atelier Nord, Oslo. It was the 4th of a series of workshops directed by Erich at AN. Here's Peter's short bio:

Musician and artist living in Berlin, Germany. He is teaching MAX/MSP/JITTER at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and workshops in Rennes, Oslo and Trondheim. Working under the pseudonym "pure" he started producing electronic music in 1991 under the influence of the then innovative energy of techno. Fading to more abstract music around 97 also his way of production changed from vintage analogue gear to software based techniques. Most of the material he released since 1999 on labels like MEGO(A), STAALPLAAT(NL) and his own label DOC heavily depends on MAX/MSP based works.

The workshop involved:
- General introduction into MAXMSP & JITTER
- Programming techniques
- Basics of audio and video processing
- MAXMSP for physical computing
(sensors and effectors)

The workshop was a four-day, 10 am - 6 pm hard and fast race to keep up with Peter's patching examples. Practicality and functionality were focused on rather than delving into aesthetics of audio-visuals. Apart from just trying to keep up with the work, I did get to try out the accelerometer that I plan to try out on the foot pumps of the pump organ, and to learn how to smooth out unwanted data (for example, when the accelerometer responds to environmental vibrations rather than intended movement). I used the accelerometer to control the parameters of 2d graphics.
