THE NORWEGIAN THEATRE ACADEMY
Since May 2003 I have held a 3.5 year research position at at the
Norwegian Theatre Academy in Fredrikstad, 1hr 10 min outside Oslo by train.
The Academy is affiliated to Østfold University College.
My project was accepted into the Programme for Research Fellowships in the
Arts in January 2005.
NTA is a small institution with around 25 students. It offers two lines of
study, stage design and acting at Bachelor level (hopefully an MA program
will be available in the future). Entry is by audition, and the school aims
to bring together competent students from diverse backgrounds and countries
to create an international environment.
NTA was previously called The Academy of Figurative Theatre - a reference
to its earlier days as a school of puppetry and its profile on focusing as
much on visual theatre (if not more) as on text-based theatre. Impulses from
the field of visual arts are infused in the teaching methods, reflecting a
more cross disciplinary approach to theatre studies than other exisiting theatre
schools in Norway.
